Assouan
Assouan, appelée Syène par les anciens Grecs, est une grande ville de Haute-Egypte, sur la rive droite du Nil. De nos jours, Assouan compte près de 250 000 habitants. La ville se situe géographiquement au sud de l'Égypte, à environ 843 km du Caire.
Assouan s'étend au niveau de la première cataracte du Nil, qui en compte six : ce sont des rapides qui rendent la navigation difficile, sans l'empêcher complètement.
Selon le découpage administratif de l'Ancienne Égypte, Assouan se trouve dans le premier nome (circonscription administrative de l'ancienne egypte ), appelé aussi le nome du « Pays de l'arc ». En égyptien ancien, le nom de la ville était Souenet, qui signifie « commerce ».
